Happy New Year and welcome to a new decade! Just about everyone will be making all sorts of resolutions to better themselves in the new year, and the new decade. Why not also make some resolutions to take better care of one of your largest investments? We think this is the perfect time! As with any kind of change, taking small steps in the right direction will help you stay the course. Here is our list of just 5 of the best resolutions you can make for your Hill Country home this year.
1. Create/Update a Home Maintenance Checklist
Zillow did the legwork for you (and us) and prepared an incredibly thorough checklist broken down into weekly, monthly and yearly tasks that should be checked off to keep your San Antonio home in tip top shape. Everything from cleaning out shower drains, to checking your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, to picking one area of your home to give a makeover/remodel.
2. Schedule Maintenance
Numerous service providers offer service plans to regularly maintain the most important aspects of your home, such as roofers, heating and A/C, water heaters, etc. While spending money just to have these items checked may not seem like an exciting way to budget money for your home, these maintenance checks can prevent minor issues from becoming major catastrophes. Should you decided to sell your home, records of these service checks will also be excellent to provide to prospective buyers.
3. (Re)evaluate the Yearly Repair Budget
With the start of a new year, it is a good idea to examine and familiarize yourself with the existing warranties for your home. If any will be expiring this year, make sure to have these aspects inspected by a professional to ensure they’re still in good order. It is also a good idea to evaluate the age of your appliances, roof, etc and adjust your monthly savings to accommodate for potential repairs that might arise as your home ages.
4. Begin Planning your Home Projects
If you’ve undergone any sort of remodel, you know that timing is of the essence. Knowing what you’d like to do with the space, from the textiles, floor plan changes, paint colors, etc. will speed the process along once you’ve hired a contractor. We also recommend having as many selections made as possible, prior to booking your remodeler. This will allow orders to be placed as soon as they have the measurements and will help ensure a timely completion.
5. Book Your Remodel
We’ve all heard the phrase, “The early bird gets the worm”. What better time to repeat it than the beginning of a new year! The earlier you can get on a contractor’s calendar, the sooner you’ll be enjoying that remodeled space you’ve planned for. Keep in mind that most bathroom remodels take around 6 weeks to complete and larger kitchen makeovers take around 8-9 weeks.
We hope you’ve found these resolutions helpful and enjoying your home in 2020!
